Summary: The Greenwitch haunts Trewissick and Simon lies awake. For
light_at_last, my new TDIR community.
He doesn't need to be looking out of the window, as Jane is, to know the village is restless, full of whispers, haunted. He lies flat on his back in bed, glad he was able to fool Great-Uncle Merry -- so that he wouldn't be worried -- and stares up at the ceiling, back stiff and straight. To his relief, Barney really is asleep, breathing softly and slowly in a way that's comforting to hear. Simon desperately wants to keep him safe -- to keep Jane safe -- somehow. But right now, right now he feels as if, if he moved, the power of the Greenwitch would come down on him, crush him alive.
When they were younger, when they were frightened, they'd all share a bed. Simon'd pretend he was protecting them, but it'd be Barney's back to his chest and Jane's hand in his that made him feel safe. He had to hide that, after all, so that now they think he's brave, the bravest one, the strongest.
He's regretting that now.
There's a noise outside like crackling flames, and Simon shuts his eyes tight, ignoring the sound, ignoring the mental images it brings. And then he slowly -- deliberately -- clambers out of bed and goes over to Barney's and looks down at his sleeping face like he's making sure he's safe.
And then he lifts the covers and nestles in beside Barney, curving to fit him, curving to fit the little space there is. He's glad Barney's tiny, now.
"Sweet dreams," he says to Barney, even though Barney's already asleep, as if that's a charm that'll make it true. And then he closes his eyes. Everything's all right now, everything's fine. I'm here. I'll protect you.
It makes him feel strong.
