"Well, she's happy," Rikku says, hands on her hips, watching Yuna with Tidus with a bemused kind of pleasure, as if she doesn't quite get all that's going on but she's just happy to go along with it. She glances at Paine, grinning just a little in that way Paine's got to know over the time they've known each other definitely means trouble. "What about you?"
Paine raises an eyebrow at her. "Me? I'm fine."
Rikku laughs, poking her in the upper arm and still smiling, almost making Paine want to smile back at her. "But you're not happy. C'mon, tell! What'd make you happy?"
She isn't really sure about the answer to that anymore, though. She thought seeing Yuna happy -- truly happy, that is, not just incidentally happy -- might do it for her, and she thought that maybe just being along for the ride would do it, but none of it really did. She wonders if she ever knew. She looks over at Yuna and Tidus, now hand in hand as they wander off together, and she shakes her head. "I don't know."
Rikku frowns. "Of course you know. C'mon, teeeeell! Pleeeease."
If there's anything more annoying than having Rikku badgering at her, Paine doesn't know it. She huffs softly, making her hair flutter up out of her eyes and then fall back down again. "I don't know what it is, Rikku. What will make you happy?"
She expects that to faze Rikku, at least a little, but the girl simply crosses her arms across her chest, tipping her head to one side and wrinkling her nose in thought. "For everyone I love to be happy," she says, finally. "I think. Or -- no, I shouldn't say it."
Paine raises an eyebrow again. "Gippal?"
"No way!" Rikku makes a face, honestly amused at the idea. "I mean, yeah, at one point, but he's like another brother to me, and just as crazy as the one I've got."
"So what? Or who?" Paine asks.
Headtilt again. Rikku looks at her like she's trying to figure her out, figure something out about her. Finally she nods, taking a tiny step closer. Paine resists the urge to take a step back and waits while Rikku finds the words.
"Rikku?" she says, finally, and just at that moment Rikku seems to make a decision and moves forward, hand rising to tangle into Paine's hair as her chin tilts up so she can kiss her. For a moment, Paine holds completely still, and then it's like all the tension floods out of her and she tugs Rikku closer, arms wrapping around her, her stiff mouth relaxing into the kiss.
"There," Rikku says, when she pulls away, looking more pleased than Paine thinks is really warranted. "I'm happy now. Are you?"
She gives that a moment of thought, as if she has to examine it from all angles. She kisses Rikku again, softly now, thoughtfully, pushing her tongue into her mouth and pulling her closer to press against her, feeling her all warm and soft and there. "Yeah," she says, when she breaks the kiss, looking at her, "I'm happy now."
