"Do you -- " Allan stops. Will looks up at him, expression guarded now as it hasn't been since the very first, since he came to trust him with his life. He'd still trust him with his life -- but still somehow less than that, now. Allan scowls a little, the guardedness spurring him on rather than not. "Do you really love Djaq? I thought you and me were, you know, I thought we were -- "
"I do love Djaq," Will says, quietly. But there's a look of confusion on his face and Allan kneels down hastily next to him to kiss the flat mouth into a curve, to make Will's eyes brighten just a little. He's glad that he picked a time when no one else was around, so he can do this; he almost chose a time when Little John was close at hand in case they ended up fighting or something.
"I didn't mean -- I mean, I like Djaq a lot too."
"You love her," he says, rolling his eyes, and yet still somehow less guarded now despite the awkwardness of both of them saying they're in love with someone else. He reaches up, cupping the back of Allan's neck and giving him that confused, unhappy look again. "I don't know what to do about it. I mean... we're, we do..."
"Have something," Allan supplies, moving from squatting on his heels to actually sit down, moving so he can put his arm around Will. He has to admit that Will's right to be confused, because he's confused too -- here they are, stumbling into, well, a relationship, having no idea what they're doing, and then suddenly both saying that they're in love with someone else. And yet saying that -- suddenly knowing that -- hasn't changed one bit of what he feels about Will, even if that feeling is more difficult, more secret, less speakable.
"Yeah, we have something, but..."
Allan prides himself for being good with ideas. Clever, or really clever, take your pick. He's got out of worse situations than this before -- much worse. After a minute, he grins, full of his new idea, and draws Will closer to tell him, to see the possibility and all its implications play out behind Will's eyes.
---
Will agreed, of course. When it comes to Djaq or Allan, he usually agrees. When it's a matter of both of them, Allan figured he was pretty much bound to agree, and so far the hypothesis has proved right. Further testing will be required, of course, but -- Will's eyes are bright with excitement, worry and hope, all evening, even as he engages in the usual banter. Allan would love to say that he's more controlled, but really, no, he's not. Couldn't be, not like this.
"Djaq," he says, as Robin and Much at least are preparing to go to bed. "Can you come over here? Me and Will want a word with you," and over her head he sees Robin wink at them, like he knows, like he's encouraging them, and Allan has to take a deep nervous breath in mid-sentence, finishing with an odd note in his voice that has never been there before, "in private."
He's never been nervous like this -- but then, nobody has mattered like this.
When he says it, she smiles. He's not quite sure what to make of that smile until she's grabbed Will's shirt -- he's closest -- and pulled him down into a kiss.
She's not the average girl, for sure. Allan's pretty sure though that it works in their favour.
