Summary: It doesn't hurt, yet.
Much knows he's a replacement for someone else who isn't there, but will be someday, but for some reason, he can't help but let that be okay. Everything is different, here, in the Holy Land: normal rules don't apply. In normal rules, he doesn't have to sit up all night with his master because the demons are tearing them both apart inside out. In normal rules, they don't have to sit and talk about nothing to hide the fact that they have nothing to say. It just makes no sense.
(To be honest, he's not entirely sure that he doesn't blame the place itself for the madness that takes hold sometimes.)
He likes to tell himself, when Robin is kissing him, that Robin has to feel something for him, or he wouldn't use him like this. It wouldn't mean anything, if he didn't mean anything, and sometimes -- just sometimes -- his master does rely on him. And sometimes he talks about the future, the life he'll make for Much, and how they'll always, always, be friends.
Much knows that friends isn't what he really wants, inside, and that it does hurt, somewhere deeper than the pain of fighting and the homesick feeling, and the love, and the loyalty. He knows that he won't really feel that hurt until the rest of it has gone away, and for now, it feels okay. Kind of numb, sometimes, but all in all, okay.
(If only he knew.)
