TDIR: Family

Fandom: The Dark Is Rising
Pairing: Will/Bran
Warnings: Sap
Rating: G
Summary: Bran was shocked by Mrs Stanton's reaction to his relationship with Will. For [livejournal.com profile] over_look.

Bran's eyes were still a little startled and curiously wide, Will thought, as they got into their car after filling the boot with things from his mother -- practical things and Christmas presents and a large cake crumbling with fruit and decorated in the most Christmassy fashion with icing and holly. "Your mother," Bran started, and then he stopped, perplexed.

"She doesn't mind," Will said, deciding that stating the obvious might help it register. "Not like your Da does."

"She even got me a present."

Will laughed softly, and took his attention off the road to glance at Bran, just for a split second, to catch the sight of him in wonder and amazement and yes, happiness. He reached over and placed a hand on Bran's leg lightly, squeezing gently. "Of course. You're my boyfriend -- one of the family now. Did you hear her talking about how glad she is to see me finally settling down? She says she'll have to visit us, because -- " he stopped for a moment to force his voice higher, into almost his mother's tones -- "'boys are always horrible slobs when they first settle down, and with you there's two of you.'"

"Da will come," Bran said, as if he hadn't heard, his eyes on his hands, clenching slowly into fists. "We just have to give him time."

"I know," he said, gently. He squeezed Bran's leg again and then withdrew his hand, turning a fierce concentration on the road to give Bran time to think, to weigh the new reaction and reconcile it with his prior experience -- arguments every night until he'd stalked out, head held high, to find Will and tell him that he'd had enough. Poor Owen, Will thought. It wasn't his fault that he found it hard.

He let the silence creep between them for a mile, two, three.

"That cake'll last us a while," he said, finally, to break the tension a little, "Mum's cake always does -- can never have more than a little slice at once or you feel stuffed," and then, in the same breath, "I love you, Bran."

He didn't take his eyes from the road, but he could feel Bran's pleasure in hearing him say the words. He could hear it clear as anything in Bran's voice, in the deepening of the Welsh accent. "I love you too, Will Stanton, you and your busybody family."

Will laughed.

For that moment, he had happiness, bright and warm and complete, and he refused to think of losing it.

The domesticity here is adorable! Also, it's nice seeing people other than the boys pop up.

He reached over and placed a hand on Bran's leg lightly, squeezing gently <-- I love these little details. I suppose that's becoming apparent, hm?

Though it's a bit odd -- on one hand I really like how you can allude to a scene without writing it out, and still articulate what happened (I'm referencing the incidence with Owen). However, at the same time, I'd really like to see more than just glimpses into these universes.

Well, I suppose I can look forward to your longer fic then, eh? =)

I pretty much adore writing Owen-and-Bran scenes, so it's surprising that this involved Will's family, really. XD I adore a lot of the minor characters of TDIR, though -- John Rowlands, and Owen, and Stephen Stanton, and Gwion and Gwyddno in the Lost Land... I should write longfic involving more minor characters, some day.
