Summary: Allan's five minutes in the year of believing. I make no assurances of historical accuracy. For [livejournal.com profile] over_look.

"I didn't know you were so religious."

Allan looks up, making space for Will next to him, in front of the fire. "I'm not. What makes you say that?"

"The way you reacted yesterday. You were almost as worried as John."

"Oh. That." Allan laughs a little, slapping Will's back gently and shaking his head. "I don't believe in God. Least, I don't think I do. I mean, heaven would be getting pretty crowded now, don't you think?"

Will frowns slightly. "So why were you so worried about that mask thing?"

He shrugs, looking rather more serious for once. "It pays to be careful, I've always found, in the lying and thieving trade, and in fact in every other trade I've ever found myself in. I'm sure the same goes for working with wood -- you might chop a chair's leg off or, you know, your finger. Which'd be inconvenient. Anyway. If God exists, then he's going to have it in for me, right? Since I don't believe in him exactly. Towers of flame and pillars of salt and all that. I figured the mask thing might piss him off a bit, so it was a good five minutes of the year to pick and believe in him for."

Will doesn't know what part of that needs correcting more, and can only say, quietly, trying not to laugh; "I think you're mixing your Bible stories up."

"That just proves my point. Do you believe in God?"

Will is quiet for a moment. "I'm not sure. I always used to. I'd always go to church, like everyone else, and it did interest me. I thought I understood why the war in the Holy Land was necessary, too. But now..."

"Yeah," Allan says, like that proves his point, and Will closes his eyes.

"How can you... not believe, though?"

He shrugs. "Well, you commit a few minor sins, break a few laws, skip away from punishment unharmed a few times, catch it bad a couple more times, lose most of your family, and then you meet someone who really makes you want to be sinful and you think: 'oh, to hell with that', and if you're lucky, they're thinking that too."

"Huh?"

"Guess I'm not lucky," Allan says, but he doesn't look too sad about it and his mouth is on Will's a second later, just to make sure.

Turns out he is lucky.
