"My brother is gone, my mother is gone, and yet still I remain," Aravis says, softly. She pushes the window open and leans out, looking out into their garden. It seems somewhat withered now, to match her mood, though no doubt it is being tended just as well as always.
She tries not to cry. She reminds herself that she is a Tarkheena -- that regal blood flows in her veins. She must be strong: unyielding, even. She must hold her head high -- even as her father marries another wife, and even as that wife comes to hate her bitterly.
