philosophy_20.
The voice is always there. Ellone isn't sure if anyone knows about it -- whether Ultimecia even knows it gets through. A constant breath of a whisper, telling her what she could do, what she could be. She could bring Raine back. She could make Squall happy. Anything, if she surrendered to her true power.
"No," she tells the whisper. "Raine was then. She wouldn't be the same in the now. It's not my place. It's not my place."
The whisper tells her that Squall and Laguna could be happy. That even she could learn to forget. That Ultimecia would make everything okay. That, at least, Ellone knows not to believe.
"Things are as they are because they are meant to be as they are," Ellone tells the whisper, and tries not to think about what Laguna or Squall might say, when offered the chance to bring Raine to them through time. She doesn't tell them because of that -- and because stubbornly, with a strength that Raine herself taught her, she knows that she can make the decision on her own. That she knows best.
One day, they will be with Raine in another place. Until that day... she'll keep doing what's right.
