FFX-2: Patterns of Three

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Pairing: None
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Baralai, Gippal, Nooj and Paine talk things out at the end. For [livejournal.com profile] pyre_flies.

"Guess it'll never be the four of us again," Gippal says, with his graceless ease of opening a topic everyone else wants to examine but doesn't dare begin. Baralai looks up at him, something like pain in his eyes, but Nooj and Paine remain quiet, knowing he isn't finished. "I mean there's you, Lai, all important nowadays. I mean, we all are, but... And you, Nooj, too, all responsible. Never thought Paine would be the only one floating around without responsibility, but there it is."

Paine shrugs slightly. "I have loyalties."

"Of course, but not like we three have. And I guess that loyalty isn't to the Crimson Squad anymore?"

She smiles, thinking of the sweetness of Yuna and the brightness of Rikku. There's sweetness here, too, sweetness mingled with a long bitterness, a sweetness that will draw them back but not keep them forever. "No. It's to Yuna."

"Thought so," Gippal says, and he grins with the brief amusement at getting something right.

"It's not like this friendship is gone now, though," Baralai says, quietly. He looks around at them all and clears his throat. "I mean... I bear no grudges. I want to work with all of you to make a better Spira."

Nooj shrugs as if to say me too without quite saying it. Gippal grins.

"I didn't say it was gone," Gippal says, and there's a hell of a lot of fondness in his face as he looks at the other three. "I just... things have changed. Funny how things fall into threes, though."

"What do you mean?" Nooj asks, when no one else does.

Gippal shrugs. "Me, you, Baralai. Yuna, Rikku, Paine. I mean... Paine's a good girl and all, but she's got another group now. It's more us three and her three now, I'm thinking."

Baralai smiles. "Three is a good number. But a fourth is always welcome."

Paine smiles as well, a hint of vulnerability creeping in with that smile. "I've missed you guys."
