Summary: What Matron would've wanted. For [livejournal.com profile] philosophy_20.

Her footsteps ring against the stone, warning them that she's coming, if they care to listen. The Orphanage echoes with the sound of feet and voices, like ghosts from the past, memories stirring within its walls as the touch of those who lived there so long ago awakens it. And it rings with the old anger, the old rivalry, that never burned out. Ellone turns the corner and stops, looking from one to the other, from Squall's narrowed eyes to Seifer's clenched fist.

"This is a reunion, not a rehashing of old arguments," she says, a trifle more assertive than she'd once been. And, changed, too, Squall doesn't look at her with his eyes all melting into softer feelings.

"Why is he here?"

"Seifer has a right to be here," she says, over Seifer's snide comment. "You need to... resolve your differences. Matron would want it this way."

Squall's jaw clenches tighter on itself and Seifer's fist clenches tighter. They both look at her now, though, pain in their eyes. Seifer relaxes a little -- even laughs, and the laughter booms a little, taken and magnified by the stone that missed his voice. "You're such a manipulative little witch, Ellone."

"Don't say that about Sis!"

Two sides of a story: here to be reconciled. Matron asked her to do that for her, the one thing she'd never managed to do. Ellone thought it impossible, but as the smile breaks over their faces, she knows. There's the yin in the yang, the two sides closer than they think. They both smile at themselves, at the memories and the arguments, and smile at her as she beckons them inside to the others.

A start, at least, her mind whispers to the woman who is gone.
