Their laughter catches at him and stays to dully ache inside, because it is so impermanent. They won't always be here, can't always be here. They're not even here as he wants them now: caught up in each other, both wanting him but believing him unreachable.
They're right. He'll love them, but he won't take what he wants. He so rarely does, even with it freely offered: he just offers a bitter smile and watches them watch each other.
He can't take what he wants, because it wouldn't last if he did, and taking it would make it all the more impermanent.
