FFVIII: Promises

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: None
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Seifer returned to Balamb to keep a promise. For [livejournal.com profile] darkranger's prompt of "wanderer". Hints at Seifer/Squall/Zell.

It'd been a while since he'd been in Balamb Town, and longer since he'd been in Garden. Too many memories there, too many false starts and too many people who'd've loved to cut his throat in his sleep. He strayed up to the gates of the Garden just to look, but found enough murderous glares there to last him a lifetime, and didn't bother going to see Cid or Xu or any of them. They wouldn't want to see him anyhow.

Instead, he wandered back into Balamb Town, taking the path. He had his gunblade, of course, and he'd had plenty of practice with it over the time, but he wasn't in the mood for carving up monsters today. He had a purpose in being there, or he damned well wouldn't be there at all.

The dock was just the same as it'd always been. Or just as different, he thought, philosophically. The waves were never the same water, after all.

He laughed, then, quietly and to himself, and got plenty of odd looks for it. He ignored them. So, Balamb Town was the same and yet different, and it was the same with him. The same, too, with the people he was waiting to meet, of course.

"Almasy," a quiet voice said, and he turned quickly to see Squally-boy standing there. More mature, now, of course, and he'd even got a little taller -- almost tall enough to meet Seifer's eyes without tipping his chin up in that way he'd had.

"Leonhart," he said, easily.

"Glad to know you still recognise him," another voice observed, and Seifer turned to see Zell standing there, grinning, looking no older or taller or wiser. Seifer actually hugged him, though he hadn't even touched Leonhart, who gave off the same don't-touch-me vibes as he always had.

"It's good to see you," Squall said, softly.

Seifer turned to look at him, looked at them both, took them in. "Didn't think you'd keep your promise."

"A promise is a promise," he replied, shrugging.

"Happy birthday, Seifer," Zell said, with a cheeky grin, punching him lightly in the shoulder. "Welcome back to Balamb."

"I didn't say I'd stay here."

Squall actually smiled. "We didn't say we'd let you leave again."
