"I could've had my SeeDs into this palace in..." Squall pauses, considering it, and then looks up, tipping his head so that his hair falls back from his eyes -- so that Laguna can see he's serious: dead serious. "Five minutes, maybe ten."
"The security here isn't that bad. Kiros and Ward see to it..."
Squall snorts softly. "That figures, but I'm willing to bet they've never been trained in security. Common sense does well enough to some extent, but for the most part people like you, sir. Any attack made would be by highly skilled individuals, probably hired for the purpose. Probably SeeDs."
"But... Garden would surely never accept a contract to kill me."
Squall clears his throat. "Actually, in the time I was commander, we received several such requests and didn't automatically refuse."
Laguna stares at Squall, and then looks away -- reminded suddenly that having Squall for his chief of security isn't going to be a comfortable father and son reunion. Somehow, he'd convinced himself it would be. Or that -- well. He'd thought they could be more comfortable with each other, anyway.
He finds himself staring at Squall in the uncomfortable silence following what he said. He's gotten the best features from both his parents, it seems: so much of him is Raine, so much of him, though, Laguna recognises from looking in the mirror. He's handsome, even with such an icy personality -- even with the icy eyes that don't come from either Laguna or Raine.
"Money is money, for SeeD," Squall says, after a moment, almost apologetically. "I had to -- "
"It's alright," Laguna says, quickly, not sure he wants to hear anymore.
Squall meets his eyes for a moment before he looks away again, icy and professional again in a heartbeat. "As I said. This place needs securing. I can do it, if you give me a small detachment of Estharian soldiers to work with..."
Laguna nods assent to that, and to so many other sensible, professional suggestions, daydreaming the time away...
