Squall is curled up beside me, tucked against my side -- the pose of a child curling into itself, frightened of the dark. I wonder if he was, as a child. If that Matron of his got up in the night to turn on the light and console him.

Probably not. Even now, he doesn't need anybody. Not really. Not even me.

I run my fingers through his hair, wrapping an arm carefully around him. As much as I wish I could've been there for him, there's this, too: something I would never give up.

I dare to think even he is happy.
