When he heard the news, Nida thought he might faint. Squall'd always been there. Invincible, untouchable, a constant temptation. He wasn't supposed to die.
(Heroes die young, but commanders die younger, someone said, a little mockingly, and Nida ruined his reputation for being a good boy by punching them and knocking them flat.)
He wasn't there at the funeral. Being the pilot of Garden, he had a post to stay at, even if there were others training to the job just as well or better.
It was the first time he'd used the place as shelter to cry, but definitely not the last.
