It wasn't the castle he wanted to be in. It wasn't the bed he wanted to be in or the person he wanted to be kissing, but it was a castle and it was a bed and it was a person, and that was quite enough for Kain. The castle, the bed and the person he wanted were denied to him -- the first by himself, the latter two by circumstance.
He wasn't a coward. But he didn't think he could watch Cecil and Rosa living out their own happy ending. So he found his own, mediocre, ending, and got married.
