madain_sari.
"I want to ride on a chocobo someday," she'd said, to Doctor Tot, imperious and eager. He'd simply nodded, amused in his dry way by her seriousness, and she'd thought that would be the end of it. She was never going to get to do anything fun. Well, nothing that was fun in an ordinary way -- nothing that could be done by one of the Alexandrian kids she didn't see playing around in the streets below the palace.
It was her birthday. Naturally, she expected something -- a new dress, maybe, and an elaborate party with more new and exciting recipes used in one sitting than ever before. They always broke some record in honour of her birthday.
Instead, she was woken early -- or relatively early, anyway -- by General Beatrix, who seemed very amused at the whole situation. "Happy birthday, your highness," she'd said, nodding towards the clothes laid out on a chair. No pretty dress -- not even a skirt. Instead, plainer, though still expensive clothes.
She looked to Beatrix for guidance. "What's going on?"
"A surprise, princess," she said, needlessly. "Please hurry up."
There's a hint of command in her voice that she can't keep out of it. She's too accustomed, Garnet thinks, to ordering people around. She doesn't say anything, though. That's her mother's place -- no one else can really command Beatrix to do anything. She gets dressed quickly, and lets Beatrix sort her out -- tugging at her clothes and smoothing out the odd bunching of fabric that betrays the fact that these clothes aren't, in fact, tailored to fit her.
Of course, since they're obviously to do with the surprise, they couldn't be, or she might have had some inkling about it.
Doctor Tot was waiting for her when she was finally ready -- something that took too long, in her opinion, and apparently in Beatrix's opinion, too. That surprised Garnet, somewhat. Beatrix always seemed the type to stand calmly and patiently waiting for someone to get dressed even if the palace was about to fall down around them.
"What is it, Doctor Tot?" she asked, immediately. The ancient creature looked amused, aheming and clearing his throat.
"I informed the queen of a certain wish you expressed to me, and it was decided that -- "
"A wish?"
"To ride a chocobo," Beatrix supplied, while Doctor Tot was still looking rather startled at the interruption. She smiled a little when Garnet's eyes immediately widened, amused by the eager look on the princess' face.
Doctor Tot looked even more surprised when the princess hugged him. Beatrix was almost sure the poor thing would never recover. It made even her laugh.
