Kaylee thinks she's always known that Simon isn't hers to keep. At first his heart was all proud and stuck on Osiris, stuck on his little sister -- and that at least will never change -- but then it melted some, and she thought he'd stay forever. After the thing on Miranda, after all they went through, all they lost, she thought... She thought that he'd stay, because the spirit of Serenity is in him now. He loves the ship -- not as she does, but still, it is a kind of love.
But she's realising now that she was wrong. Simon might love it here, but he doesn't really belong here. Much as he'd like to, he's not made for this kind of life. If he was a different kind of man, it might even be a game. Get on a ship, steal a girl's heart, love her and leave her, like a commoner.
Simon doesn't think like that, she knows that, but it's still a bitter knowledge that he's the same in a way. He can't, won't, stay. There's not enough to keep him here. She can pin him down and rouse passion in him like no one else, she can make him moan, she can make him take control and fuck her hard and fast, she can vary it and keep it the same when she finds what he likes most, but still she won't be good enough to keep him with her.
She will be happy, for now. She forces herself to be that. But there's just this little unhappiness in the center of that image, the pips in the apple, that keep her from being completely happy.
