15pairings.
They weren't the prettiest, rarest flowers anyone had ever given Inara. They weren't some token of time spent together from a young lord, elaborately arranged and delivered with a little clever note that implied so many things while saying so much else. But Kaylee'd picked them for her, and so they had pride of place in a little vase -- carefully secured, so that no matter who chased Serenity, shot at them, or caused them to execute crazy manoeuvers, the vase wouldn't fall, smash, or spill.
They'd come with a note, too, as most bouquets she'd ever received had. It wasn't subtle, or clever, in the way that notes from noble young men were. But maybe it was all the dearer for that, and because it'd come from their little mechanic.
It said, 'I love you', and that's all Kaylee had felt the need to say.
And that note was carefully secured among Inara's belongings, and she took it with her, wherever she went, long after the little bouquet of flowers died.
