"I've got work to do," Squall says, all of a sudden, disturbing what was supposed to be a quiet meal together. He puts his knife and fork down, neatly lined up, pushes his chair back, and leaves as abruptly as he spoke. Rinoa takes a breath, to ask him when he'll be back, but by the time the words come he's gone and she looks down again, unhappiness crossing her face.
"He never... opens up. He says he loves us and then -- "
"Ssh," Seifer soothes, leaning back in his seat and reaching for Squall's plate, bringing it over and stealing some of the things he left. "Squall's just like that. He does love us. The worst thing would be to doubt that."
Rinoa smiles, after a moment. "What would I do without you?"
"End up ruining your relationship with Squall."
Seifer's voice is heartbreakingly serious, annoyingly truthful, just now, and Rinoa looks away from him. It's true. Everytime she reaches out, Squall seems to pull back. They live in the same room, the three of them, sleep in the same bed, have sex, and they say they love each other, but he's just as impenetrable as he always was. She pushes her dark hair back with a sigh and stares down at the table.
"Is there anything we can do...?"
Seifer shrugs slightly, a hint of irritation on his face. "Wait."
And she suddenly remembers that he has been waiting longer than her, and she feels sorry.
