When she found the bite mark livid and bright on his neck, Rinoa was angry. Not possessively so -- she knew that she couldn't stop Squall and Seifer's relationship, the fighting and the fucking, anymore than she could stop time. Once she'd shared Seifer with Squall, now she shared Squall with Seifer. It was just the same. But still. Seifer hurt him. She'd lie in bed waiting for him, midnight and past midnight, and sometimes he would come in at three in the morning and slide into bed beside her. And then she would wrap her arms around him and hold him, hold him tight, hold him close, as Seifer never had and probably never would.
"It's okay," she said, softly, running her fingers over the bite and murmuring a healing spell. It broke her, too, to know that Squall was always breaking over Seifer. Carefully, she ran her fingers through his hair, kissed him gently, and kept holding him.
His voice was quiet, almost emotionless, but not quite. "I love you."
Rinoa closed her eyes, and then felt him shift; and then he held her against him, shifting back into his role of protector. She buried her face against his shoulder. "I love you too."
She wanted to tell him -- remind him, because he knew so intimately already -- that Seifer didn't love him, won't, can't. But Seifer had a lure for Squall that she'd never be able to match, and she would always just be glad that she could be with him at all.
