When Tracey said he was going to go off to war, she worried. She's always loved him most, her youngest son, the last before her husband died and left her with nothing but a home on an icy planet and a life of bringing up five children alone. Somehow, he seemed to suffer from the lack of a father more than the others. He can't do anything right -- but, persistantly motherly, she insists that it's not his fault. Everyone knows he's clever.
Smarts just ain't good enough, is the problem.
Anyway, when he tells her he wants to go to war, he's still all alight with humour like always, but she doesn't doubt that he's goin'. She's told him often enough about his father, the brave, brave soldier. She regrets that now -- giving him expectations of himself he can't possibly hold himself to. But at least she gave him parts of his father.
"I packed you some o' them ration bars, like your papa had," she says, fussing with his hair and helping him with the twisted straps of his bag. "Maybe they'll be useful someday -- "
"Yes, yes, thank you, Mom," Tracey says, impatiently, pulling away from her, his eyes bright with the coming adventure. She kisses him goodbye, and lets him go forever, all in one movement. She watches him walk away, and doesn't expect to see him come walking back.
