From the minute he meets the little girl's eyes, Cecil senses the beginning of something. Something big, something bigger than himself and bigger than a kingdom, bigger than he ever imagined happening in his life. He feels shame, followed by a sudden sick taste in the back of his mouth, for the way he's destroyed this kid's life -- and doubtless, destroyed others as well. She has a right to look at him with resentment.
It only takes a minute for him to decide that he'll follow her wherever he can. Protect her. Pay back, somehow, the debt.
