F: Bedwarming and Sex

Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Jayne/Simon
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Summary: All work and no play makes Jayne a dull boy. For the Back to Firefly ficathon.

Jayne has become more serious of late, a fact which amuses and concerns Simon somewhat. It's natural, he supposes, for a little to rub off -- but his own nature tends to overwork and apparently, or so it seems, so does Jayne's. Life on Serenity doesn't really require all that much work, as far as Simon can tell, but Jayne seems to have found some anyway -- helping Mal plan heists. The heists inevitably turn out badly, or at least not as well as expected, and Jayne and Mal go right back to the drawing board.

Simon has gotten too used to the solid warmth of Jayne in his bed to risk losing it by pointing out that heists might go rather better if he stopped getting involved with the planning process. Jayne is taking it so seriously -- another shock for Simon -- and he has to suspect that Jayne is just trying to prove himself worthy of his rather more accomplished lover.

A fact which sort of makes Simon smile, actually.

He's probably wrong, of course. Still, Jayne's dedication to actually doing something aboard ship -- other than consuming at least fifty percent of the food and sleeping at least sixty percent of the time and lifting weights another twenty percent -- is enough to tug a smile from Simon anyway.

Until it ends up that Mal and Jayne stay up one night so that Simon doesn't get that solid warm bedwarmer at all and ends up staring up at what passes for a ceiling on Serenity, without even cracks to count. He never thought he'd get so attached to Jayne that he'd be sleepless without his presence, but apparently he is -- a fact which needs thought at some point, but not now.

"You didn't come to bed last night," he remarks -- casually enough, he thinks, and quiet enough that really Jayne can't take it as him starting some kind of argument, and so that Kaylee doesn't hear the whole thing.

"Was workin'."

It's still odd to hear Jayne say that. Simon takes a breath, finishing drying a dish and then turning to find Jayne just behind him, close enough to touch. He speaks before he thinks, one of his more exasperating habits, but for once it doesn't seem to matter -- "I missed you."

"You did?"

Simon bites his lip. He'd rather not start on that particular conversation now -- for now it's best that their relationship sticks to bedwarming and sex. "On Osiris, we had a saying... I mean, you might've heard of it, but... the point is..."

Jayne rolls his eyes.

Simon cuts all the chat and just says it, glancing up at Jayne, "'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'..."

"You sayin' you think I ain't had enough time for 'play' lately?" Jayne asks, raising an eyebrow, oddly perceptive for once. Simon's insides squirm a little at the innuendo -- play -- but it's true enough that he did mean that. He smiles a little, lowering his eyes.

"Pretty much."

"I think I can do something about that."

Jayne's smirk leaves no doubt in Simon's mind about what something is. It's enough, for now, to have that. But, he thinks, smiling ruefully to himself -- he'll want more, soon enough.

I like Jayne's determination in this, and this line:

Jayne is taking it so seriously

just gives me mental images of Jayne's concentrating face, and a sort of labourious but intense process of planning. I like the idea that he's trying to branch out in his roles! This is a sweet snapshot of their lives! I'll add it to the masterlist!
