Cecil wakes to darkness from darkness, and only knows that he's woken because he can feel his heartbeat thudding in his chest, and because he can hear his breath coming quickly, too loud in a silent room. He's shaking with the aftereffects of his nightmare, and so he rolls himself up like a bundle in the covers and sits up, holding onto his control tightly.
If he were a few years younger, he'd cry. Fumble for a light. Anything. For now, he sits still, and tries to remember he's too old, too brave, too smart, to be scared of the dark.
