Summary: Fraser stands on guard and Ray admits something to him while he won't talk back.
It was just a thing he did on a whim once. Fraser was being absurd, standing in front of that building as if there was nothing else in the world more important than that, nothing better to do. Ray could think of lots of things. Lots and lots of things, starting with the practical and spiralling down into the downright sordid.
The good thing about the times Fraser did this absurd activity was that you could say anything to him and he would barely even blink. In fact, usually, he did such a good impression of a deaf and dumb statue that he seemed to almost believe it himself, and never brought up anything you mentioned to him again.
That's why Ray felt so comfortable blurting it out. He almost wanted to cram it back into his mouth when he had, of course, 'cause who the hell says 'I love you' just like that to another guy in the middle of Chicago on a busy day? That could have done, he thought, with some more thinking over.
Fraser didn't even blink.
There was a bell chiming in the distance.
Ray decided that now wasn't the greatest time to be keeping Fraser company. In fact, he thought getting out of there could be a good idea.
"Ray, wait!"
Ray blinked, not sure whether to turn back and look at Fraser or run. His legs were saying run, but something he might term his heart if he gave it any thought said to turn and look at Fraser. His voice was, after all, gentle, soft, gentler and softer than usual. Before his legs and his heart had the chance to go head to head, he heard Fraser's boots on the sidewalk behind him. He had no chance of outrunning the mountie, he had to admit it.
"I thought -- " he started, and then stopped.
"Shift ended," Fraser said, by way of explanation, and kissed him.
