The minute Squall got Seifer behind the controls of the Ragnarok, he knew it'd been a good idea. Seifer was a natural at nearly everything he tried but he had never tried enough at anything but his gunblade skills. Squall had been looking for some way to prove to him that becoming a SeeD was worthwhile and this had been a last ditch effort. An inspired last ditch effort, but a last resort nonetheless.
Seifer's face was alight with actual enthusiasm as he tried to figure out exactly what to do beyond the basics. He was always good at things like that, too, so Squall let him be and just watched him, enjoying the feeling that, finally, he was getting somewhere with his wayward ex-lover.
It had been, Squall suspected, more of a struggle because of the very fact of their rather unresolved past relationship hovering in the air. They'd never split up, but there had been so much time -- so much fighting -- and there'd been Rinoa, briefly but significantly. They'd simply not spoken of it and watching Seifer's actual grin as he figure out how to really fly, Squall regretted that.
But that seemed about to resolve itself too when they stopped. Both stood, ready to leave the cockpit, Seifer's face still alight with enthusiasm, and there was a long moment that seemed longer still because all of a sudden they were face to face -- almost nose to nose.
"You'll stay in Garden? For the piloting lessons?"
"Not just the lessons," Seifer said, softly. He paused, and then shook his head. "It's not time for that yet. But... you know what I mean."
Squall knew. It made him smile as he watched Seifer leave.
