Summary: The desert is a temple.
The desert is a more hostile place than Baralai realised, but a peaceful one. Gippal brought him here to make him understand that, but he's learning as much about Gippal as he is about the desert. The desert, it seems, is a part of the Al Bhed that could never be taken away, almost like their kind of temple, a part that quiets and sustains them and teaches them everything about life they need to know.
He's always seen Gippal as a wanderer, but here in the desert the man is at peace in a way he loves to see.
