Summary: Duo works his way into Heero's life.
Heero was disturbed by the sound of banging on the door.
He got up and went to answer it, silent as a cat, glancing through the window at whoever was there, seeing only a blur of black, frowning a little. He didn't know who it could be. Nobody visited him except the odd salesman, and those he ignored. He was about to write this disturbance off as one of those when he heard the visitor's voice.
"Damn it, Heero, I know you're in there, I saw you!"
"Duo?" he asked, incredulous, but not to the figure outside. It was more a question to himself. He opened the door slowly and met Duo's eyes. "Duo," he said, softly, and wasn't sure if he was relieved or annoyed to see just Duo standing there. Duo tipped his black hat back a little, striking a little pose and grinning in a way that Heero knew was trying to win him over.
"Can I stay with you for a while?"
Heero hesitated.
"...Sure," he said, finally, and opened the door a little more.
Duo stepped in and closed the door, looking as if he belonged in the small hall as he took off his hat, kicking off his shoes. Heero left him to it, drifting back to the work he had been doing. Duo didn't interrupt him again until later that day, and then he arrived with food and another grin.
"Whew. You haven't got much food in those cupboards of yours. I'd've gone shopping, but..." he trailed off with an expressive shrug, quickly filling his mouth with food.
"How did you end up broke?" Heero asked casually, almost just to show off how observant he still was.
"Skills not getting dull, huh, Heero?" Duo laughed softly, and didn't seem bothered. His braid fell forward over his shoulder and Heero kept his eyes on that. It was safer than Duo's face, his laughing eyes, his winning smile. "I gave my money to a good cause."
"I see."
And that was all they said about it.
Heero tried to ignore the way Duo worked his way into his life. He ignored how good it was to have someone around to help, sometimes, someone he could throw ideas at about work and not worry about them going anywhere else. Someone who would grab him a snack or take him a drink or make dinner, sometimes. Someone who made an honest effort, which was more than some people seemed to.
He was almost disappointed when, one evening, Duo made an announcement.
"I've got a job."
He thought that, maybe, once Duo had a job and was earning money properly, he would move out. And he was almost ashamed at the idea that he'd gotten so used to Duo's company that he wanted him around so much. Certainly he was a little ashamed that he selfishly wanted Duo to stay close to him, forever.
"But... I wanted... Heero, can I stay here?"
For the first time since he'd opened the door to him, Heero met Duo's eyes, his mouth opening a little in surprise at the seriousness and hope there. Duo smiled, moving a little closer.
Heero closed his eyes and surrendered to Duo's smile.
