At some point, Mal almost started forgetting that Zoe could cry. Oh, he knew she was human an' all, that she had feelings, and gorramn powerful ones at that, that was never in question whatever else was. But he'd seemingly forgotten she could react to emotional pain in any way other than that closing up and soldiering on, and he suddenly hated himself for it.
"Zo'?" he asked, holding her closer. She was cryin', tears running down her face and all.
"I'll be alright in a minute, sir," she whispered, trying to pull away and hide the tears. He didn't let her.
