The afterlife really isn't as bad as advertised -- plenty of alchohol of a kind a good deal better kind than mudder's milk, for example. And there's the opportunity to keep up with the previous world, and really the only thing is the lack of Serenity and the lack of the rest of the crew, who became like a family to him. And especially Zoe, of course.
Considering that to get all of those to him would require large scale accidents, Wash can be patient -- and he's not entirely without company. And, of course, though he doesn't depend on it at all -- the alchohol certainly helps when really necessary.
