FFVIII: Perfect Stillness

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: None
Warnings: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Ellone doesn't know if the greatest crime is to stay still or to change things. For [livejournal.com profile] philosophy_20.

She is still.

Ellone is a point of perfect stillness within a converging timeline, a point where nothing changes and is only discovered, witnessed. She will not act -- the being that is Ellone is not tied to the body, and the body will not act without the being, and the being is elsewhere, suspended in a thousand fragmented moments and comprehending exactly none of them. She pulls herself in, recalls that she can lose herself --

And reaches out again, to a point in time where she simply was and felt no guilt for that, to watch again as her parents --

But that moment is too painful and she reaches out again to the memory of a long haired man and his warm, dry hand, sure and secure as he held hers and she knew, Ellone and the child that would become her both knew that that man would die for her.

Reaching forward, she knows he will, but holds herself back from that pain and will not let it become her, a shadow walking her footsteps seeking only to change what must be. Prophetess of the uncertain and holder of one possible way, never knowing when to say yes or no, never knowing when she should exert pressure or stay still and so she only stays still and lets the world turn about her.

She lets the world turn.

Very nice. I like the sense of razor's-edge balance that you create for Ellone, which goes hand in hand with the sense that is it the prophecy that makes things happen, or one's actions because of the prophecy that makes it happen.
