F: Prologue

Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Mal/Simon, Mal/River
Warnings: Sap
Rating: PG
Summary: It ain't that he can't choose. Timeline here.

It ain't that he can't choose or anythin' like that. It's that both the Tams have their own charms and their own forms of love and both are completely and horribly captivating. It's that Simon's kisses are addictively shy and that Mal gets to teach him everything, and that River knows what he wants before he knows himself. He's not sure what Simon'd do if he found out that Mal is sleepin' with another and that other happens to be his sister.

He's pretty much hoping Simon never finds out, 'cause he can't stand the thought right now of losing either one of the Tams. Inara went an' walked off Serenity before he even tried to win her and then he realised how much --

But that ain't the thing to be thinkin' of. The thing he was thinking of was Simon's kisses and those warm responsive ways of his, and the warm flare of his anger that just makes Mal smile on the inside most of the time. Simon doesn't know how to get angry, not really, and Mal loves that in him as he loves pretty much everythin' else 'bout him.

And River, well. What he likes about her, what he loves, ain't something he can define. It's the way she can smile, one minute all teasing and the next all knowing and the next just lovin' him. She loves well, does the little albatross, just him and Simon and Serenity, and he can handle that if she can handle that he loves Simon and Serenity too. And when they fly Serenity together, that's some of the best times Mal's ever known. Serenity respondin' to them like River's an expert pilot and makin' him feel like the learner. She's taken his advice about lovin' things to keep 'em in the air to heart, and it's damned perfect to see her flyin'.

Ships and relationships. Love's what makes 'em work, and Mal loves better'n anyone knows.

Thanks. :) I shouldn't be taking long with this arc, I have it all planned out and it's only eight parts long, counting the prologue and epilogue.
