FFIV: Burn

Fandom: Final Fantasy IV
Pairing: Edge/Rydia
Warnings: Angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Rydia waits in an agony of not knowing for the battle to be over. Continuation of this drabble, for [livejournal.com profile] ff_flashfic.

There's no sign of him. There're the bodies of monsters and men and far away, in the dark, far from the lights of their lanterns and candles, there's a group of people still fighting, pushing back the wave of monsters. Rydia takes a deep breath and lifts her lantern high, looking for his body, his face, among the dead. She'd know it anywhere, even buried under a monster's body, unless...

She doesn't know if it's a comfort or more agony that she doesn't recognise his body among the dead. She binds her hair back quickly and turns to her people, her people now, because standing up there without Edge, watching, making suggestions and sending reinforcements and healers, she became more their queen than any marriage to Edge could make her.

"We need to get these bodies buried before they cause a stink. Dump the monsters in a heap over there for burning. Bring our people inside."

They nodded and obeyed, without a word, already falling into the breathless hush of a graveyard. Rydia works with them, relief growing inside her at every dead face that is not Edge's, horror rising for that relief when she realises that even if Edge is not dead, so many other husbands and sons are. And some wives and daughters, too.

It's late night when she feels she can't go on anymore -- too cold and too weary, too heartsick. She commands them to go to bed, but none of them sleep, and they all find themselves out there again just hours later. She lights the monsters' pyre with a fire spell that drags and burns her on its way out, burning her with her own weariness and the knowledge of possible grief.

"They've stopped fighting!"

Rydia looks up, dropping the heavy, cool body she was dragging and shading her eyes against the sun that even now creeps across the sky as if oblivious to death below. "Edge?"

"I can't see him, m'lady," someone mutters, but then there's a cry and at long last her heart drags itself up from somewhere in her stomach.

"Edge!" she calls to him, and she sees him wave, and finally, finally, she can start to relax. She only fully relaxes when he reaches her and wraps his arms around her, and she can press her face into his shoulder and hear him tell her that she held up her end well.

And they cheer for them, king and queen of Eblan, and the monsters' bodies burn.

Oh, God. What an emotional punch. So very good!

LINKING DRABBLES YAY.

I love this. I love the line about Rydia becoming a Queen, and I love how emotionally tired she is. (Although why isn't she out there fighting too? XD) It's very tense with only few words, and I like that.

Well, I wanted to mention that, but I didn't find a place to slot it in. xD She wanted to fight, but Edge was all "omg, can't have BOTH of us out there and dying, can we? ;D" and though he was being stupid she actually thought that was right. So she stayed with the people who weren't fighting. :D

Edge as the voice of reason?! *dies*

Although it does make sense. It's also hilarious that you thought about it too. They always take over my head when I write them...

Oh, yes, they "talk" to me all the time. And to other people, given the right encouragement.

...Edge would like me to inform you that whatever he is, he isn't an idiot, and he's a good king. xD Rydia would like to point out that mostly he probably didn't want her out there fighting because he likes to think he can protect her. xDD

*lol at work*

Edge, m'dear, I'm sure you're a good king. I guess it's a race between you and Rydia as to who can be more stubborn and reckless, really. I'm surprised Eblan hasn't fallen over yet. XD
