FFVIII: Sentimental

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall
Warnings: Sap
Rating: PG
Summary: Squall is adorably slow and Seifer is annoyingly determined. For [livejournal.com profile] fated_children.

"Seifer, I think you've forgotten the part where I just don't care."

"Actually, I'm kind of hoping you'll change your mind."

Squall stopped dead right in the middle of the corridor and turned round to look at Seifer, crossing his arms in front of him. A few cadets slipped past them quickly, not wanting to be in the way, although a little reluctant to walk away from what was, after all, a rather intriguing scene. Both of them waited until the cadets were gone before continuing the conversation.

"I was drunk, Seifer."

"And I wasn't. Your point is?"

"My point is that you need to stop hoping for something that isn't going to happen."

Seifer stared at Squall for a moment, then stepped forward, reaching up to cup Squall's cheek and smiling when the touch wasn't exactly brushed away. "My point is, Squall, that you have a heart and you're just afraid to use it."

"I never thought I'd hear you coming out with this cliché crap."

"I mean it, Squall."

"Nobody means that sentimental crap."

Seifer ran his thumb over Squall's cheekbone gently and laughed. "You'd be surprised. Rinoa'd mean it. And I do mean this, even if I agree with you that most of it is crap. You could love me, if you wanted to."

"Well, I don't want to. You seem to have forgotten that we've been fighting for most of our lives!"

"And still are. So what?"

"So... Seifer, get off me," Squall frowned, and brushed Seifer's hand away from his cheek as if he'd only just noticed the touch. Knowing him, Seifer thought, he probably had only just realised it. He was adorably slow that way.

"Alright, alright, I'll let it go for now."

"Good."

"But, in exchange, I'm going to kiss you."

Squall's shocked expression was only matched by the way he melted when Seifer pulled him into his arms and kissed him thoroughly, and perhaps his annoyed look the minute he realised how well he'd reacted to Seifer's touch. Wiping his mouth angrily he pushed Seifer away. "Seifer, we're in public."

"That's your only objection?"

"You know damn well it's not," Squall hissed. Then, finally, belatedly realising he should have done it five minutes before, or maybe not stopped at all, he turned on his heel and walked off. Seifer didn't follow him -- not this time, not yet. After that conversation, however, and the way Squall's defences had just seemed to fall from him at that simple little kiss, Seifer was far from giving up.

----

"What the hell gave you the idea you could mess around in my office?"

Seifer looked up, smirking a little at Squall's pissed off expression. "Happy Valentines day to you too, Squally-boy."

"Seifer."

There was one of those warning notes in Squall's voice that Seifer delighted in ignoring. He took a sip of his coffee, ran a hand through his hair, and tipped his seat back a little. "Care to join me, Leonhart? Since I assume you're taking up the offer in the note."

"Offer? Oh. No. I'm not."

Squall, when blinking in confusion, was actually rather adorable.

"No?"

"No. I -- Seifer, why the hell did you come into my office and mess around?"

"All I did was leave you a note, Squally-boy, and a bar of chocolate. Dark chocolate, even, the kind I know you like, because Rinoa told me."

"Rinoa told you?"

"I asked."

"So she's in on this too?"

Seifer took another sip of his coffee and stretched his legs a little. Squall was, it seemed, in another of his slightly dense moods, in which he was so adorable but so horribly frustrating at times. He waited until Squall sounded about to say his name in that frustrated, warning tone again before answering. "No, not really. I just called her and asked her for... some ideas."

"The only ideas you'd get from her are overly sentimental crap, and you have enough of those of your own."

Squall couldn't hide the curiosity in his voice. Seifer smirked into his coffee and then finished it off, putting it down. "Care to take a little walk?"

"Seifer, I just care to know what the hell you're up to."

"You know what I'm up to."

"I don't know why."

"You should know that, too." Seifer sighed softly, pushing his chair back to get up. "And if you don't, I'm not going into my reasons in the middle of the cafeteria when everyone's listening."

Squall looked around and found that, indeed, a fair number of people were watching them with varying degrees of subtlety. Scowling, he turned and followed Seifer out of the cafeteria -- if only to stop them looking at him.

"So. Talk."

Seifer shrugged slightly, not looking at him. "I told you. I want you to love me."

"You've told me that, yes. You haven't told me why."

"If you don't know that, Squall, you're denser than I thought." Seifer gave him a brief smile and then shook his head slightly. "I need to go and think. You go and do some work or something. I promise I didn't leave anything else in your office. If you figure out why I want you to love me, well... you could always come and talk to me."

Squall watched him go, and then turned to go to his office, walking rather fast and inwardly berating himself for actually feeling a little disappointed that their conversation hadn't lasted long.

----

Seifer stared at Squall a little blearily, rubbing his eyes and hiding a yawn badly. "What the hell are you in here at this time of night for, Leonhart? I'd almost say that you're here for a repeat of what we did three weeks ago, but you're sober."

"Shut up. Are you in love with me? Is that... why?"

Seifer smiled a little and lay back down, stretching out and smirking at the way Squall carefully averted his eyes. The fact that he slept naked was obviously causing Squall some discomfort, so he was quite happy to flaunt it. "Yes, Squally-boy, that's why I want you to love me."

Squall sat down on the edge of his bed suddenly, staring at the floor. Biting his lip, Seifer wrapped the covers around himself carefully and sat up, putting a hand on Squall's shoulder.

"Shit, what's wrong with you now?"

"You really love me?"

"Yes."

"You're such an idiot."

Seifer smiled, moving to wrap his arm around Squall and leaning so that he could rest his chin on Squall's shoulder. "I know. Do you love me too?"

Squall huffed softly, staring harder at the floor as if everything was its fault. Seifer knew exactly what was going on his head. How he was asking himself for confirmation a million more times and worrying that if he said yes, he was opening himself up to be hurt.

Seifer'd known from the start that Squall would open himself up in the end. And that he would never hurt Squall -- not intentionally, anyway.

"I suppose."
