fated_children.
"Is it dangerous?"
Laguna can't help asking the question, even though it always makes Squall angry, even though the answer always makes him hurt and worry more. Squall doesn't like being worried about, doesn't like his movements being scrutinised, even if all Laguna needs is some assurance that Squall will be okay. He can't keep from asking anymore than Squall can stop going on missions. He hears Squall taking a deep breath and plays with the phone cord, waiting for an answer.
"Yes, it's dangerous," Squall says, slowly, and then, with a sigh, he clarifies a little, "but it's a big team and if anyone dies on this mission, it'll be a new SeeD. Not someone like me. Laguna, you need to stop worrying. It's not -- "
"Not good for my health?"
"Exactly."
Laguna laughs, a little bitterly, picking up a pencil and drawing a sad face on his notepad. Then a scribble that mimics his own hair. "It won't exactly be good for my health if you come back dead, either."
"I won't."
Laguna wishes he could share Squall's optimism. The word is almost funny to apply to Squall, though. Optimism? The boy is pessimism embodied. Still. About his missions, he's optimistic, knowing his own skills as well as he knows his own gunblade. He knows he can do these missions just fine, and Laguna wishes he could share that sureness.
After all, it's more than a son he loses if Squall dies.
Squall sighs again. "I have to go, Laguna."
"I love you," Laguna says, quickly, before Squall just puts the phone down like he has a habit of doing.
There's a pause, and Squall's voice is softer than ever. "I know."
He doesn't say 'I love you too'. Sometimes, Laguna thinks that's one of the biggest disappointments of his life. That his son is sure only of battle and fighting, and not even sure enough to say that he loves someone. Laguna knows he does love him.
Probably.
Just like he'll probably come by safe.
