Summary: Terra pushed her away at first, but now she can't think why. For
esper_cave.
When Celes kissed her, she pushed her away. Now, watching Katarin and Duane and the children she came to love, Terra isn't sure why. She wants it -- not just the loving, but the closeness, the way Katarin leans against Duane and the way he smiles for her, a different kind of smile to the one he has for everyone else. It's not enough anymore to have the friendship of Katarin and the respect of Duane, and the complete adoration from the children.
She wants -- more. She knows it exists, knows she could have had it, once. She wonders if she still could.
Setzer is surprised when he drops by and she's restless, not with the children, not doing anything he found her doing before. "Is something wrong, Terra?" he asks, watching her running her hands through her hair, after she's sighed for the third time in five minutes. "Aren't you happy?"
"Not... not really," she says, after a moment, looking up at him with a thin smile.
"Would flying help?"
Flying always helps him, so that's why he offers it, and though she hesitates for a moment, finally she smiles -- a proper smile -- and nods. He takes her arm like a real gentleman and leads her onto his ship and they fly -- faster than birds, faster than ever before -- and he shouts to her over the sound of the wind about all he's done with and to the airship.
Terra smiles, but she's still not exactly happy, so he doesn't take her straight back to Mobliz. "Is there anywhere you want to go?" he asks, and she shakes her head.
"I don't know."
"Well..."
Setzer doesn't take her back to Mobliz. He takes her for a little more flying.
Terra goes back to Mobliz in the end, of course. Katarin and Duane would've been worrying, and the children -- she goes back, but she isn't happy. She's content, but not happy -- stagnant, like there're no more adventures to be had.
----
Nothing lasts forever, and that peaceful, content, quiet stage certainly didn't. Relm sent messages saying that she'd love to see them all meet up again, and would Terra come? And Terra would. So Setzer picks her up again, and he's somewhat relieved to see her smiling.
"Relm, Strago and Celes are all already on board. Do you want to go down or stay up here with me?"
"I'll go down," she says, after a moment's thought, and her heart suddenly beats quickly at the thought of Celes. She's been steeling herself for it for days, weighing the benefits of going and not going, seeing Celes and acting like nothing happened or seeing Celes and figuring it out somehow. She didn't come to many conclusions, but --
But she wants to see Celes, so she clatters down with a wave for Setzer, who smiles and pushes the airship to move faster, cutting through the sky like a dart.
Relm and Strago aren't in the main room, but Celes is -- she's sat quiet, thoughtful, her hair loose and longer than it was before. She looks like a real lady, rather than a warrior -- but at the same time, somehow Terra knows that Celes is just the same as she always was, no mystery, and nothing to be afraid of.
Celes' kisses are, she remembers, a mixture of gentle and needy.
"Hey," she says, quietly, and the look in Celes' eyes is somewhat gratifying.
----
"Are you going back to Mobliz?"
"I don't know," Terra says, softly, looking out to the horizon, and trying to ignore Setzer, just across the deck of the airship from them. Celes leans against the side and looks down, unafraid, the wind tugging at her hair. She doesn't take Terra's hand, like Duane might take Katarin's, but that's okay. Terra prefers to lean her back against the side and look out over the sky, the fluffy clouds, anyway.
"I'd like to come with you, if you are," she says, after a moment, leaning out further. "I can see it from here."
"Where?"
Terra turns and Celes smiles, puts an arm around her and points out the small town. Tiny. She could blot it out with an eyelash, almost. It makes her laugh, and Celes hand slips down from her waist to take hers, their fingers tangling easily.
"Do you want me to come with you? To Mobliz?"
"Yes."
Celes smiles again. "Okay."
Setzer turns to them, glances across the deck at them and only raises an eyebrow. "Next stop, Mobliz?"
