Protection and comfort as definitions can only go so far, and then you're into spending every moment at your queen's side and you find those definitions a little inadequate. Beatrix isn't quite sure how else it could be defined, except maybe --
Except she shies away from admitting that, maybe, she loves Garnet. At least, she shies away from it aloud. On the inside, she's found it and faced it and told herself firmly that nothing can happen. Except her heart doesn't seem to be listening to her head, and she's pretty sure that Garnet cares for her, too, and wouldn't look upon it as completely impossible --
But there Beatrix's heart goes, hoping, without permission from her head.
It's easy to be fatalistic and say that she isn't, couldn't be, good enough for a queen. But the fact is that sometimes when Garnet looks at her she sees that she could be good enough -- and that frightens her.
