S'easy to end it. He feels the dreams coming, you see, knows he's been chosen and can't unchoose himself. Sees the pain coming for Zell and decides to cause the pain first. Give him time to to heal, before he fights.
(He loves Zell, of course he does, but this is just born out of that. Give a chicken a chance and every dog has his day and all of that.)
It's frightening the way his heart aches for Zell when he tells him and those eyes widen, widen and fill -- not with tears, not from his Zell, but with anger.
