FFVIII: For The End

So.

At the end of the world they stand opposite, opposite-together, and salute with their blades because it's the easiest greeting they know, easier than words, easier than trying to talk it out. After the salute always came fighting -- but what now? What now, when there seems no point in anything anymore?

Seifer tries for words. He lowers Hyperion, and he's almost fading, but they're too strong to go now -- they'll stay till the end and maybe beyond. That's them, even if the words aren't. "So, Squally-boy."

Pathetic words for the end of the world.

"So, Almasy," Squall replies, coolly, looking around at the world they know ripping apart and bulging back together. Quistis and Zell and the others all seem a long way away, and there's Ellone, and it's all her fault. All her power. A mash of time and they can never leave it -- they can try, but they'll always come back. They've come back now, to the place of the last battle with no battle left to fight. No purpose.

Except for the sheer joy of it, and Seifer is surprised to find that he could -- he could be joyful here, even here, fighting Squall, though every other emotion has seemed to die with distance from everything it might be connected to.

"One last fight for the end of time?"

It's an offer, casual and cocky, but since they're drawn together here, Squall sees no reason why not.

Nice. I like the chaos of the end of the world against the clarity of their perception of each other.
