"Why are you here?"

Terra's voice is brisk and barely masks curiosity and eagerness at seeing Celes there -- Celes. She almost looks for Locke, almost looks for the others, because surely Celes wouldn't be here just for her, wouldn't be here alone without some other purpose. Celes' smile is awkward and her shrug easy, too easy, practised. Clearly she expected the question.

"Why aren't you with Locke?"

"Because I'd rather be here. I think."

Terra knows uncertainty and confusion. She knows it when it rips and tears apart from within, and she sees it there -- milder than hers once was, but as crippling. She shrugs away doubt and takes Celes hand in hers. Warm, but not soft -- a warriors hand, and Celes grip as she squeezes suddenly is a touch painful. "Come inside, then."

Katarin stares and then smiles and nods as Terra pulls Celes into the house they all still share -- bigger now, and stronger, and warmer, but still shared because they've all gotten too dependant on the warmth of companionship when all are crowded together. There are other houses now, of course, for when someone wants to be alone, but for the most part Katarin and Duane and Terra and all the children still live here.

Maybe in another few months...

But Terra isn't ready to think about that.

"Someone extra for dinner, then?" Katarin asks, and Terra nods slightly and pulls Celes through to find a bed.

There was something, once upon a time. A spark -- one kiss. And then Celes drew back and didn't come back, and Terra left her to it. Left her to learning love with Locke, even if she wanted Celes for herself. But, then, she didn't really know what she wanted, either. She wasn't sure -- and now she is, and Celes is here, and that's almost good and almost problematical, and she's not sure what to think of it.

"You're not... you don't mind me being here, do you?"

Mind? Terra doesn't mind. Not like that. She's just going to have to work around it -- in reality and in her mind. She shrugs slightly and gives Celes a guarded smile and goes to play with the children, leaving Celes sat on her bed to think, to be confused.

She's surprised when Celes joins them, when she tries to play -- and more surprised at Celes' beautiful smile, and the way it affects her, the quick clench of her stomach around the butterflies springing up and brushing her insides with feather-soft wings.

With her arms around a child and Celes sat next to her, close and comfortable, her hair fluttering a little in the light breeze, Terra is happy. It took her a while to understand happiness and love, and longer to understand desire, that squirming rush of butterflies and want that even now stirs in her stomach beneath the smoothness of happiness and harmony. But she understands now, and she'll wait for Celes to understand, too.

Because she does think -- she dares to hope, that is -- that Celes will understand. She won't blame her, though, if she doesn't -- or she hopes she won't. She might. That's hard to tell without seeing the future, and all Terra can see is here and now and five minutes in the future when Katarin calls everyone in to dinner. Katarin has gotten better at cooking over time -- but at first it was like an experiment to see what made the right result. This herb plus that herb and whatever they had to eat, and whether it came out nice or horrible.

Maybe love is like that -- a little experiment, and Celes has tried Celes and Locke and that doesn't come out right, and maybe she wants to try Celes and Terra now.

Or maybe she already tried Celes and Terra.

Too much thinking makes Terra's stomach churn with hunger, rather than butterflies, and she's grateful for Katarin's call and the kid slipping off her lap, her legs tingling with the returning blood. She smiles at Celes without thinking and leads her inside, to dinner and Katarin's good cooking.

It's the next day before she and Celes are alone together again, and she has nothing to say, and Celes has plenty to say but can't reach it. Terra can see that -- she's gotten good at reading people, especially women and children, and she can see the uncertainty there again.

Sometimes, she needed to be forced to try Katarin's cooking, when it didn't look nice, when one taste wasn't enough. Sometimes it was the food itself that forced her -- making her feel sickly hungry and a little desperate.

So maybe she should try...

Celes blinks and then closes her eyes at Terra's kiss, and takes her hand, more gentle now than the day before. And maybe, maybe, Celes and Terra will come out just right.
