Guarding a sorceress is pretty simple, really. Or at least, it is when you're under your own control and your sorceress isn't a crazy bitch trying to take over the world. It probably helps that Rinoa is simply frightened by her power, and not particularly awed or enchanted -- although she does take a child's delight in her new connection to her knights and to the whole world. She tries to describe it for them, all the connections, but Seifer winces away from the memory of complete connection and Squall is too practical, too unromantic.
Seifer provides reckless dreaming and Squall provides the caution and practicality. Seifer lets Rinoa talk, lets her talk all three of them into a deeper communion, so deep they're almost one, but it's Squall who pulls them out of themselves, makes them three again, lets them face the world with the abilities and minds of their own. Enough connection, a deep connection, but never too much. A perfect balance.
And yet when Rinoa wakes up from her nightmares -- blood and guts and gore and bright flashing blades, her knights with her against the world, dreams of shocking glory and dark light -- it's Seifer who laughs at the dreams and Squall who protects and soothes, still holding a balance between them. Sometimes she thinks that when one tips the balance the other just moves to accommodate -- without thinking, without needing to think, just changing as smoothly and easily as they slip from battle mode to comforting.
She knows they'd follow her, if she followed her dreams. They can't not -- too bound to her and to each other, in love and in thick strangling tendrils of magic. But they'll stop her from going that far just by their pure presence. She is the lever that could move the world; the world is the pivot, and she is a weight, throwing it off balance, and they are the counterbalance that holds everything level.
And they'll never let her spin out of control.
