FFIV: Mutual

Fandom: Final Fantasy IV
Pairing: Kain/Edge, Cecil/Rosa
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Summary: Kain and Edge gradually settle down. For [livejournal.com profile] mount_ordeals.

It started in the castle at Baron because Kain was there for no particular reason and Edge was there in the secret hope that Rydia would be visiting. She wasn't, and Cecil and Rosa were busy, so technically Kain and Edge should have amused each other. In practice, they sat there staring at each other and silently hoping the other would go the hell away.

They'd never got along very well, after all.

And then Edge had started talking to Kain, because he was there and convenient. He wasn't even sure what he was talking about -- the architecture, wondering what Cecil and Rosa were up to and then pulling his thoughts back from that uncomfortable subject, the weather outside --

And then Kain kissed him, purely and simply to shut him up.

That's when it'd started, but for no particular reason Kain showed up in Eblan and Edge was only too happy to give him a room just across the hallway and creep across in the evening. And so it went, with a lot of bickering and very little apology, whenever they were at a bit of a loss for what to do or they needed somene to be close to for a while.

In a while, Edge stopped thinking about Rydia and Kain stayed away from Baron and Mount Ordeals altogether.

After another little while, they found they were spending most of their time together. Rydia came, caught them kissing, smiled and left, just as if she'd been expecting Edge to find someone else and wasn't too bothered. For a few days Edge thought about following her, saying it wasn't like that, but he didn't feel like leaving Eblan -- or, if he wanted to be truthful, it was really Kain he didn't want to leave -- and then he realised that it was like that and he might as well settle down and accept the thought.

It wasn't at all like Cecil and Rosa's perfection. It was rather more like Yang's relationship with his wife, but still it was something else and uniquely their own.

After a while longer, even that didn't matter too much. What mattered was that they mutually loved, admired, hated, needed and annoyed each other. And they decided to settle down and do that on a more permanent basis.

Oh my Lord you're making me more crack pairings to fall in love with...

What mattered was that they mutually loved, admired, hated, needed and annoyed each other. This sentence is pretty close to perfect for how I picture these two together, once they get over their snarky "You're a punk kid" "Well you betrayed Cecil twice and let Golbez mindfuck you" arguments.
