Edgar wants Sabin to be happy. It's that simple, that clear cut, and it means he'll do anything -- anything -- to get Sabin what he wants. Including cheating himself out of the freedom that seems so tempting when Sabin tries to urge him into it.
If what makes Sabin happy means Edgar sitting on the throne of Figaro alone and without his brother, Edgar will do that and happily.
And yet, though he says he'll be happy, he's left feeling empty. He knows why and he knows how to fix it, but for the sake of Sabin's continued smiles, he doesn't.
