FFVIII: Of Missing Someone

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall/Zell
Warnings: Angst, sap
Rating: PG
Summary: Squall is away on a mission and he calls to say hi. For [livejournal.com profile] ff_threesomes.

The phone rang.

Seifer grumbled softly and kicked Zell. Zell grumbled rather louder and kicked back, burrowing closer to him and snoring obstinately. The phone continued to ring, and Seifer cursed loudly and extensively before leaning over to pick it up and ram it against his ear. "Hello?"

The amusement coloured Squall's voice smooth and rich and Seifer closed his eyes at the sound of it, because it'd been too long since Squall went away and far too long since he last called. "Did I wake you up? Or disturb you in fucking Zell?"

"Woke me up," he said, gruffly, flopping onto his back and draping an arm over Zell who stopped snoring quite so obstinately. He pulled Zell a little closer and kissed him softly to wake him up, and let him rest there against him, comfortable and close enough to hear the whole conversation. Zell yawns and draped an arm over Seifer's waist, snuggling against him a little. "Zell says hi."

"I'm sorry."

Seifer snorted softly and pulled the phone away from his ear a little to glare at it. "No, you're not."

Zell reached up lazily and swiped the phone while Seifer was still wondering if a glare could travel all the way round the world through telephone wires. "Squall, he kicked me. You should kick his ass for me."

"Why can't you?"

"Too lazy."

Seifer swiped the phone again after that, turning on the hands free and dumping it on the bedside table. "And he knows he wouldn't win. No one can kick my ass."

"I can," Squall offered.

"Can't."

"You know I can."

"Kids," Zell huffed, rolling his eyes. Seifer tackled him, rolling him under and kissing him soundly, mainly because Squall wasn't there to kiss incapable of continuing an argument. Zell grinned at him when he pulled back. "Hm, nice."

Seifer huffed and poked Zell in the chest with a rather unrelenting finger. It actually hurt, and Zell caught his hand, nibbling lightly on his fingertip and then sucking. "A little better than nice, I should think, you horrible chicken. Fuck, you're such a tease."

They could almost hear the pout in Squall's voice -- the pout he would deny endlessly if ever called on it or caught. "What're you two up to? You'll be making me miss you even more."

"We miss you too," Seifer said, softly, smirking at the thought of Squall's pout at the same time as holding back a sigh at the thought of how far away Squall was. He glared at the phone some more for good measure, curling his body around Zell's and kissing him lightly. "We'll end up having a big fight unless you come home to mediate soon."

His tone was hopeful, actually. A good fight would, well, be good. And Squall coming home would be just as good, probably better. Probably, he thought, his mind suddenly going to all the things they could do once Squall was back, and some things they hadn't tried yet, Squall coming home would be best. Especially if he could be persuaded -- and he usually could, especially after being away -- to let Seifer play a little.

"Hm. I'll come back as soon as I can."

Zell squirmed a little to get more comfortable, closing his eyes and sighing. "Promise?"

Seifer wished he could see Squall's smile as he assured Zell that, yes, he promised, that yes, he did miss them as much or more than they missed him, and reminded him that the Commander of Garden quitting a mission and leaving it half finished would reflect badly on Garden or he'd do just that.

"Miss you," he said again, when Squall had stopped talking, and they both heard Squall's sigh.

"Miss you too."

Seifer glanced at the time, calculated the difference, and boggled at the time of morning it was for Squall. "Squally-boy? It might be late here, but for you it's five o' clock in the morning. What the hell are you doing ringing us?"

"Had to deal with an emergency at three in the morning, couldn't get back to sleep."

Seifer growled threateningly. "You know what I think of you not getting enough sleep. Besides, you need to have lots of energy when you get back here to us. I'm planning on wearing you out thoroughly, and you know Zell is always a chore to keep up with."

He got an elbow in the ribs from Zell before the chickenwuss put in his own opinion. "And if you don't sleep, well, how good will it look if the Commander of Garden gets dragged home from a mission by his lovers?"

"Probably not very good."

Squall was smiling again, Seifer knew it, and it put a rather silly smile on his face that he hid carefully from Zell.

Zell huffed softly. "Well, we'll do it, y'know, if you don't turn the phone off and get some sleep right now."

"I don't think I can sleep," Squall said, very quietly. Seifer moved a little closer to the phone, his hand moving up and down Zell's side.

"Just... try not to think about it. The more you sleep, the less you'll think, the quicker you'll be back here with us. And you can call us again soon, it's not like you've gone away forever and this is your last phone call."

Unless he dies, they all thought, but they didn't say it. No point in saying it -- no point in worrying.

"I suppose."

Zell settled against Seifer with another huffy sound. "Squall... we love you and adore you and miss you, but it's really late night and I want to be up in time to grab a hotdog or three in the morning. And you need to be in top shape to do missiony things. So..."

Squall laughed at that, even if it was quietly. It was an affectionate laugh and Zell grinned at it, a silly grin which he didn't bother hiding from Seifer.

"'Night, baby," he said, softly.

"Goodnight," Squall said, rather more reluctantly.

Seifer closed his eyes, curling up against Zell and holding him tightly, wishing Squall was there to curl around him, snuggle against his back. He missed that extra layer of security and warmth and hated that he was the one who needed it. "Nightynight, Squally-boy. Don't let the bedbugs bite. Call tomorrow."

"Duly noted."

There was a click as Squall put down the phone. Seifer reached over and turned their phone off. Zell made a soft sleepy noise, snuggling against him. "Miss him a little too much," he mumbled, face buried against Seifer's shoulder.

Zell was almost asleep by the time Seifer answered. "Me too."

Awwww. This is completely adorable and I like how Seifer and Squall are hiding parts of themselves away, but they each know about it, and Zell's just kind of open and Zell-like. Yay!
