Neil has a pretty powerful smile. It's friendly and warm and a bright thing in the world that fears to smile unless the thing that causes the smile is gone the next day. Neil doesn't seem to fear, and he teases out Jane's own smile now and again.
She tries not to love him too much, though. Tries to resist. Because, well, they're soldiers. They've got a war to be fighting. And any minute he could be taken away -- just whisked away for his body to fall down limp and lifeless.
She's starting to forget that.
And then he does fall down.
