"She has a heart, you know."
Simon raised an eyebrow slightly, moving closer to Mal, resting his head against his chest to listen to the steady beat of his heart. It wasn't often he had the pleasure of listening to a heart that wasn't beating in some irregular way, so he savoured it. "Serenity is just a hunk of metal, Mal."
Mal shifted slightly, poking Simon's shoulder half heartedly. "Don't insult my ship unless I've insulted you or your sister first."
"I'm sure I have a couple of insults to pay you back for."
"Probably."
Simon sighed softly, snuggling a little closer and pulling the covers over them. "You were talking about a lump of metal having a heart. Since you were probably going to make a point, go ahead. As long as you don't want me to do heart surgery on it. Kaylee might be a little insulted at me playing engineer."
Mal huffed softly and rolled them over to pin Simon under him, kissing his eagerly. "You're so cheeky to your captain, you know that?"
"Just earlier you were telling me off for calling you captain."
Mal bit Simon's lower lip lightly for being even more cheeky, running his fingers carefully through his rather tousled hair, straightening it all out. Even with his hair in a mess, Simon looked every inch the spoiled aristocratic brat with a cheeky tongue. But he shouldn't really complain -- that was what he liked about Simon, really. "That was when we were having sex. That was then, this is now."
"Oh, I see. You're selectively my captain."
"Don't twist my words." Mal huffed softly and pressed down a little to remind Simon that he was the one pinned down to the bed. "When I said Serenity had a heart, I didn't mean like a human heart."
"That's good. I don't know how to do heart surgery on a ship."
"Will you can it and let me talk?"
"Yes, captain."
"Don't bring that back on me now."
Simon smirked a little and kissed Mal softly and rather distractedly. Once Mal was quite, quite distracted from bickering, Simon pulled back, licked his lips and took a deep breath. "We were talking about Serenity."
"Serenity...? Oh, right. I... Serenity has a heart, you know."
"You've said that bit already."
"She has a heart, and it's not just the engine or the life support or any of that. It's the people. If we're happy, the ship is happy. If you get what I mean. And..." Mal took a deep breath, poking Simon in the middle of the chest. "I can't help but think Serenity must be very happy right now."
Simon looked up at Mal for a minute, and then reached up to take Mal's hand into his, tangling their fingers carefully. He bit his lip, closing his eyes and nodding slightly. "Love you too."
"I didn't say -- "
"Yes, you did. Now can I get some sleep?"
Mal was left staring at Simon, who had closed his eyes and settled down as if it were the most natural thing in the world. And, Mal thought, it probably was, by now. He smiled and laid his head on Simon's chest and listened to the slow steady beat of his ship's heart.
