FFX-2: Epilogue

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2

Summary: Together again in front of the world. Converted from a roleplay with [livejournal.com profile] threefold_law.

The Celsius lifted up overhead just as I reached for Baralai's hand, and the crowd turned to stare at it, watching it take off. I wasn't too sure of how Baralai felt about me -- after all, we'd barely talked and hadn't touched since that day... that day that I don't want to talk about.

But his response was reassuring, his fingers first curling around and then tangling with mine.

I squeezed his hand gently, looking up and waving to the Celsius as it swooped over the stadium, keeping it in sight for as long as I could, more to avoid Baralai's eyes and his reaction than for any other reason. Suddenly, though, he turned around, drawing my attention straight to him. He was smiling.

He kissed me, right in front of the whole stadium, and I don't think he even thought about it in the slightest. He just closed the distance between us as if it was nothing more significant than a few moments separation and he kissed me, eagerly, and didn't seem to mind when I wrapped my arm around his waist.

Wow, I thought.

The crowd didn't see us for a moment. They were too busy watching the airship carrying Lady Yuna take off. Then they slowly went quiet. I felt their eyes on us but didn't do a thing, feeling Baralai press up against me and the familiar, euphoric feeling of him kissing me thoroughly.

But I did pull away, and laughed at the instant bubble of talk as people hurried to talk about the latest unexpected thing. Baralai's blush was instantaneous, bright, and made him look like a little kid caught kissing his first girlfriend. It made me smile as he groaned in embarrassment.

I was about to make him more embarrassed still.

I kissed him lightly and held him close.

I leaned towards the microphone.

"What are you all looking at?"

He groaned again, but he didn't pull away or run away, he just hid his face against my shoulder, using that and his high collar to disguise his embarrassment (badly).

"Never seen two incredibly hot guys kissing before?" I asked the crowd, teasing, laughing.

Baralai pulled me away from the microphone.

Nooj snorted at the display, obviously amused by my antics -- as he always had been -- and that, more than anything, made us all realise that things were back to normal between us. I held Baralai tightly as Nooj took my place at the microphone, smiling at the crowd, enchanting them all with the mild humour that had made us all love him, way back when. "As you can see, our differences have clearly been settled."

I waved at the crowd, making a brief face at Nooj for his amusement, but I wasn't really bothered. It was Baralai that was, he was taking a step back when I tightened my arms around him, holding him there for a last crowd pleaser. "Tell 'em bye for us, Nooj."

He muttered something about it being just like old times, but he was smiling, and he wished us luck before he turned back to the stadium. "Since I believe all of you would like nothing better than to go out and celebrate, and these two obviously want to be alone... go, but don't forget. We're all in this together."

I grinned one last time at the crowd, waved, and let Baralai drag me off, to his relief. He ducked into a locker room I knew was used by the blitzball teams and sat down on one of the benches, still blushing a little.

"That was unexpected, from you," I said, but I smiled, and sat down next to him, resting my chin on his shoulder. All the trouble was over, and I was with Baralai.

Hate to say it and be a ridiculous sap, but I was content.

"It felt appropriate," he said, shrugging.

I nuzzled against his cheek, closing my eye and smiling as I thought about it. "Oh, it was."

He sighed, though. "Was it really?"

"Well, I thought so," I said, holding onto my happy mood, kissing him, but knowing his kiss in return was less than enthusiastic. I turned more serious, pulling away and taking his hands in mine. "I really missed you. I don't want to feel like that again."

He nodded slightly. "But I've changed, and so have you."

I wanted to tell him that maybe we'd changed for the better. I wanted to tell him about Rikku and her obvious attraction to me and my own complete lack of interest in anyone. I wanted to tell him that all I'd thought about for the past few months was him, and not because of Shuyin and Vegnagun. What I eventually said was, "I can't... I won't give up on you until we've at least tried things again."

So there.

He reached up and cupped my cheek, making me look at him and leaning closer, smiling, so I smiled back. "So... what do you think?"

"I think we're doing the right thing," he said, softly, smiling and bumping his nose against mine, his lips so close they brushed over mine. So I kissed him again. He wrapped his arms around my neck and for a moment we just kissed, not saying a thing.

"Hmm, since most of Spira has seen you kissing me, do you think we can do away with the idea of secret visits?" I asked, teasingly.

"Of course," he said, laughing softly, and then he rested his head against my shoulder, closing his eyes.

And we just savoured being together again.
