Summary: Squall has investigated Seifer's family. For
thirtyforthree.
"Just tell me, damn it. What did you find out?"
Rinoa leans against him, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing his cheek softly. She's trying to soothe him and damn her, it's working. Squally-boy just sits there with a pile of papers on his lap and a look on his face that Seifer's seen before, when he can't bear to lie but doesn't want to tell the truth. He pushes Rinoa off, gently, and sits down beside Squall, worming an arm around him and pulling him in close.
Lips against Squall's temple, nuzzling against him gently, Seifer asks again. "Squall... please. Tell me. What did you find out about my family?"
Rinoa cracks first, as always, wedging herself onto the sofa beside them and leaning her head against his shoulder. "Seify... your family died during the sorceress war, that's why you were at the orphanage."
"He knows that," Squall says, softly. Seifer tightens his arm a little, bringing Squall in closer and nipping at the rim of his ear now. He hears Squall's sigh and feels him relax, and moves to lift the papers off Squall's lap and throw them on the floor. "Seifer, don't -- "
"Too late," Seifer says with a smirk. "Now," another nip, "tell me. Even if you think I don't want to hear."
Rinoa touches his arm gently, calls his attention to her, and when he looks at her his eyes meet hers and suddenly he doesn't want to look away. Damn sorceress. "What do you think your parents were like, Seifer?"
"...Good people. Kind. My father... I always imagined him as a knight. A good guy, too..." Seifer snorts softly, "and crazy in love with my mother. Hell, sometimes I think my mother might've been the sorceress he served. But I have no real idea what they were like and sometimes... sometimes I wish they were just ordinary people who were victims of circumstance and didn't do anything to harm anyone."
Rinoa smiles a little, still holding his eyes on hers. "Sounds like a nice dream."
"I used to think of them all the time. Now," he forces himself to look away, closing his eyes tightly for a moment and then turning to Squall, glaring at him, "tell me. Am I right or am I so wrong I'm going to hate myself in a minute?"
"Maybe we should tell him, Squall. He deserves to know, and," she smiles, "he won't let the topic alone if we don't."
"He's a stubborn idiot and he doesn't know what he's asking."
"Still. Just tell him, Squall. If he goes all murderous on you, I'll protect you, I promise."
Seifer snorts. "Isn't it our job to protect you, princess? Not the other way round?"
Suddenly Rinoa is all serious, looking up to meet his eyes and poking him gently in the chest. She wants him to know this. Wants him to know that even though Ultimecia never spared him anything, not all sorceresses are like that. That she's not like that. "Maybe, but I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe in return."
Squall takes a deep breath, shifting closer to Seifer and wrapping an arm around him as if for reassurance. Which one of them he's reassuring, nobody is too clear on. "Your father was a sorceress knight... to the sorceress who caused the war in which your mother died. Your father was killed by his sorceress for a failure when he suffered a defeat."
"Fuck." Seifer takes a deep breath, but before he can pull away from the two of them, Squall's arm tightens around him and Rinoa grabs his arm. He stops and moves to rest his forehead against Squall's for a moment, reaching up to tangle a hand in his hair before kissing him. His voice, when he finally speaks, is a little rough, as if with tears, except Seifer Almasy never cries. "Looks as if it's in my blood to be fucked over by a sorceress, huh?"
"Don't say -- "
"It's the truth."
Rinoa flinches a little and Seifer sighs, drawing her closer and kissing her too. "Sorry. Guess I'm just not feeling too happy about this."
Squall elbows him in the side, but gently, rolling his eyes a little. "I offered you a chance to remain ignorant, but you just had to nag until you got it out of me. I don't know why Rinoa even told you that we're were trying to find news of your parents, let alone that we'd actually found something."
"I'd rather know than not know, and it's not as if I blame you. The truth is the truth. I guess I was just kind of hoping..."
"Yes?" Rinoa prompts, ever-so-gently around this ever so delicate subject.
"I was kind of hoping my dad was a good guy. I guess I did want him to be a knight, but... I wanted him to... not go the way I went, you know?" Seifer takes a deep breath and tries to smile, "Guess I sound like Raijin with the 'ya know'."
"Seifer, stop belittling yourself and your father. I won't have it."
Both of them look up at Rinoa, surprised, as she stands up, putting a hand on her hip and giving Seifer a firm look.
"You're my knight now, so you can prove yourself to me and clear the name of Almasy for good. Or you can keep being a whiney old git and slip off in the night because you don't deserve me and Squall or something stupid like that."
Seifer has to smile. She knows him well. That was exactly what he'd been planning.
"Stay, Seifer," Squall says, softly, and Seifer knows he can't do anything but. He hugs Squall close and kisses his forehead softly.
"Of course I will, prettyboy. Can't have you looking after a sorceress all by yourself. You might lose track of her in a shopping mall."
Rinoa laughs. Then she holds out her hand to Squall, indicating for him to get up and out of Seifer's arms. "...On the other hand, it might be a benefit to get rid of him, right, Squall?"
"Seems so," he says, calmly, and takes her hand in his, tangling their fingers and letting her tug him along to the door. Seifer watched them for a moment, then stood up to follow them, wrapping his arm around Rinoa's waist and whispering a soft thanks.
He couldn't leave. He belongs with them, after all.
