The first time they meet Squall is covered with blood and glassy eyed with pain and in need of a doctor right the fuck now. Simon is just there, and Squall knows right away he can relax because Simon doesn't stop to ask questions, just starts fixing him and asks for what he needs to know as he works.
Pain and then painkillers fuzz Squall's perceptions, but he doesn't mind as much as he should, because through the fuzz he can feel his capable hands, quick and sure and professional, reassuringly steady.
The next day Squall offers him a post in Garden.
